Friday 9th December 2011 we arrived at Noumea, New Caledonia, after having a day at sea yesterday.
Noumea, on the island of Grand Terre, is the capital of the French territory of New Caledonia. The peaceful port city has a diverse population and colorful European architecture, reflecting its colonial history. Having served as the headquarters of the US Army during WWII, the tropical shrubbery of Ouen Toro Mount is now under the protection of abandoned Naval guns.
We docked at the main port...and today we are going on an excursion...

We thought it would be an excellent choice to see the highlights of Noumea, which is New Caledonia’s capital city, dubbed the Paris of the Pacific. The cosmopolitan boulevards and parks are in full view through the open windows of the "Tchou Tchou Train" which is a motorized vehicle that took us on a guided orientation of the city and surrounding area.
We boarded the Yellow Tchou Tchou Train right at the passenger terminal and our first port of call was driving through the city center and up to Notre Dame du Pacifique lookout point for nice views of the city.
Next, was the military barracks, built over one hundred years ago. Charming Faubourg Blanchot is one of Noumea’s oldest neighborhoods; its old colonial homes are enchanting.
The grand Promenade Pierre Vernier is lined with tall coconut palm trees,which edges the waterfront.
From there we moved on to the lookout at Ouen Toro, where we had a panoramic view of the blue lagoon and neighboring islands. Here we were served with a soft drink and some french pastries while soaking in the natural beauty.
Once back on the train it was on to Anse Vata Beach, and Lemon Bay, a favorite getaway for visitors and locals. Here we passed the yacht club, Orphelinat Bay and the Southern Province Government House.
Finally, we drove through the Place des Cocotiers – Noumea’s lively shopping center.
Here, we were given the choice to get off and check out the shops, and walk back to the ship which was a 10 minute walk... or stay on.
It was a great day....we returned to the ship for a late lunch on our verandah and relax for the rest of the evening..
